The Iranian hijab movement emerged in response to severe Iranian regulations mandating women to wear a headscarf or hijab as part of their daily attire.
In recent incidents many individuals have been arrested and warned, in some cases given severe penalties, for non-compliance. In one such example, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested for breaking these dress codes. Her detention and tragic death by Iran’s morality police provoked massive protests among Iranian women demanding greater freedom.
What began as a local demand in Iran has become a global movement, with “Women, Life, Freedom” banners in major cities such as Sydney, Zurich, Auckland, London, Melbourne, New York, Paris, Rome, Seoul, Stockholm, Protests were witnessed. The movement represents a broader call for women’s rights and autonomy that transcends geographical boundaries.
