Marine Cloud Brightening: A Promising Solution for Climate Mitigation

Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is a concept developed by British cloud physicist John Latham in the 1990s. The primary goal of the MCB is to fight global warming by altering the Earth’s energy balance by increasing cloud brightness.

This cutting-edge technology aims to mitigate the consequences of climate change by increasing reflectivity and deflecting more solar radiation back into space.

For this the clouds have to be made white and bright. According to John Latham’s estimate, it may be able to offset the warming effects of a doubling in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels since pre-industrial times by brightening clouds over selected ocean areas. Marine cloud brightening is the process of optimizing the reflectivity, or albedo, of clouds in virgin marine settings. Sulfate and sea salt crystals dominate these clouds, resulting in larger droplets with low light reflectivity.

The MCB process is performed by spraying small droplets of seawater into the atmosphere using water cannons or specialized vessels. As these droplets evaporate, salt particles precipitate, which serve as cloud condensation nuclei. These nuclei encourage the production of dense and bright clouds, which aid in the overall goal of reflecting more sunlight back into space.
