India signed the Antarctic Treaty in 1983 and was granted consultative status on 12 September the same year. The National Center for Polar and Ocean Research, formerly known as the NATIONAL CENTRE FOR POLAR AND OCEAN RESEARCH, leads the nation’s polar and southern ocean research efforts.
The recently passed Indian Antarctica Act, 2022 also includes mineral conservation measures in Antarctica as well as a ban on the introduction of non-native species.
India currently has two active research stations in Antarctica: Maitri and Bharati. Notably, Dakshin Gangotri was the first station built before 1985, although it is currently inactive.
