जब पृथ्वी की आंतरिक गर्मी से पिघली चट्टानें सतह के नीचे होती हैं, तो इसे मैग्मा (magma) कहा जाता है। और जब भी यह मैग्मा सतह से ऊपर आता है तो उसे लावा (Lava) कहा जाता है।
लावा और मैग्मा दोनों अर्ध-ठोस और तरल अवस्था में होते हैं और धीरे-धीरे बहते हैं। सिलिका की मात्रा उनके प्रवाह की गति को नियंत्रित करती है।
